Vanrai Bandhara
वनराई बंधारा
A Vanrai Bandhara is a small, low-cost, temporary dam constructed across streams using plastic/cement bags filled with soil, sand, or gravel to alleviate water scarcity and raise groundwater levels. It is typically constructed through community labor bylocalresidents to impound water after October, when the stream’s flow is about to subside.
Key aspects and benefits of Vanrai Bandhara:
Objective: To work on the principle of “Paani Adva, Paani Jirva” (Save water, let water seep into the ground).
Structure: Usually
no more than a meter high, it consists of layers of sacks filled with clay and placed on top of each other, preventing water from draining away.
Materials: Sand, soil, gravel and empty cement bags are used in this.
Advantages:
Availability of water is ensured in rural areas during summer days.
Groundwater level improves.
Irrigation facilities are available for agriculture.
Water conservation in an eco-friendly manner.
This is an excellent example of public participation which plays an important role in solving the water crisis.
